We're both in our early 40s and financially not doing too well. This economy has hit us hard. I've been unemployed most of this year with no prospects of employment on the horizon. My wife is the breadwinner but she's constantly complaining that she hates having to pay all the bills by herself. Well, We like in a rental home but my wife is complaining that she wants us to buy a house. How can we buy a house when our credit in in the toilet, I'm not working, and she's spending like there's no end. She'll come home and literally tell you, "you need to get a job." Yeah, like I can make someone hire me. She thinks we can just walk into a bank and they give us several hundred thousand to buy a house. Even though she keeps saying we need to get our credit improved she thinks that she has the right to keep getting her hair done, nails done and go shopping cause that's what she needs to do to pamper herself. Our biggest problem are bills, mainly medical bills that aren't getting paid.My wife thinks that because she's got pretty descent insurance on her job that only has a $20 copay she can just go tot he doctor when ever she wants. If she sneezes she runs tot he hospital. If her knee is hurting she'll call a specialist. Right now she's going to physical therapy because she woke up the other day and had a crook in her neck.Me, I'm the type to self medicate until I feel better. Heating pad, ice packs, ibuprofen, etc. What my wife doesn't understand is that a $20 copay is great but in a month when the bill comes in the mail that statement gets pushed to the side and goes unpaid. I can't get her to understand that we've (she's) gotta stop this or we're never going to get back on track. Yeah, I need a job and that will help but I can only do so much. The more I tell her to stop the more she does it. The other week her son was outside playing basketball with his friends and twisted his ankle. Instead of icing it for a while and resting it she ran him to the hospital. They gave him crutches and a brace. The very next day he was back out playing basketball then when he sees her coming he jumps on the crutches. A total waste of money cause that bill is going to be coming soon. What happened to the days when we were outside playing and twisted an ankle and our dads just told us to "walk it off"? How do I get my wife to become financially responsible?
Last week she came home after getting paid and made this announcement. "I'm not buying that many groceries this week cause I want to get an iphone." I told her she didn't need an iphone cause her phone worked fine. She then told me it was only $50. Well, that's $50 worth of groceries we could have in the house. Then she said that she's going to get her hair done the next morning. Thus spending more money. I love her but don't feel like I have a right to tell her how to spend her money since she's the breadwinner. She's even told me that she works so she spends it how she pleases.
Added (1). Yes, I'm a stay at home dad but its not like I'm just sitting at home playing video games during the day.In between my job hunts I cook, clean, do laundry, and what ever repairs need to be done. If I was a woman and my husband was spending money like this most of you would be saying that his money is our money and I have a right to say how it's spent. But given that I'm the guy and she's the one spending I'm getting that she has the right to do with "her" money what she likes. WOW, what a double standard here.
