Itunes not picking up my iPhone? - 1

When i plug my iPhone 6 into my macbook air, my phone starts charging and iTunes will open, but the iPhone icon at the top left blinks? Like it connects for a second then stops then again. Then after a while a message on my laptop pops up saying: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone. Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings." I really don't want to factory reset my phone, is there another way to fix this? Why is this happening? I've plugged it in many times before and its worked fine… I haven't changed anything. Ive tried restarting my phone and laptop, I've tried a different USB, but nothings worked!
