What should we do to save this iPhone?

My girlfriend dropped her iPhone 6 in the bath last night. We quickly turned it off and threw it in rice. The top corner of the screen was already smashed and I piece of the screen was off. So I imagine water got in. But this morning I plugged it in and it started. The phone seemed fine. The only problem is the screen doesn t work. It doesn t respond to a finger print. She has apple care but apparently they don t cover water damage. Would getting a new screen help or is there internal issues with the phone? Is it possible that this problem could only be water damage related of could we fib to get Apple care to compensate for her phone. Too pay out her contract would be very expensive, Please Help!
