Could the victim of an iPhone theft get into trouble himself for this?

This is hypothetical, but I've been hearing news reports of people's iPhones getting snatched right out of their hands by thieves.

Suppose a guy is using his iPhone while walking in a parking lot. A thief comes up and snatches the iPhone out of his hands and starts running. The guy runs to his car, starts it up, and runs the thief down in the parking lot. He doesn't kill the thief, but seriously injures him. He gets out of the car, takes the iPhone back, and drives away, leaving the thief lying on the ground seriously injured.

Could the iPhone owner get into trouble for this?
Added (1). So the thief gets to walk away unpunished (other than the vehicular injuries)?
